Man in the Mirror

Written by Jaime Walden

At Central Park West and 72nd St, Strawberry Fields represents more than just a memorial for John Lennon.  It’s a place to reflect on the life and death of a former Beatle, a musician, a poet, and an advocate for peace.  Fans of all ages can stand at the center of the mosaic and face the Dakota where John once lived, remember buying their first Beatles’ album, or “Imagine” all the people whose lives John touched.  Reminiscent of the great shock of Lennon’s death, today we have lost another music legend—Michael Jackson.  Jackson was more than just an artist and entertainer.  He rightfully claimed his title as the King of Pop with record chart-topping hits, breaking racial and cultural boundaries, and employing iconic elements like his predecessors and counterparts such as Elvis, Lennon, and Madonna.  Where would MTV be without “Thriller?”  How would we dance backwards and forwards at the same time without his “Moonwalk?”  When I was six years old, my first dance recital was performed to Michael Jackson’s “The Way You Make Me Feel.”  All of us little girls wore the glove.  Beyond all of the scandals, controversy, and social oddities, (which all serve as necessary evils in defining a pop culture icon,) his talent defines him as a legacy.  It’s an understatement to say it’s truly a great loss to have such a musical genius taken from us.
