Leggo My Ego

Written by Hans Tanner

Sometimes we can let our egos get the best of us.  No, I don’t just have a need to state obvious things today, I only have a different perspective to offer on the list of things you know to be true.
When you live on a bus for 10 months out of the year, travelling the country with the same 4 people (driver included!) there are certain truths you once considered valid that become a little more complicated i.e. that you know exactly who you are and where your faults lay.  Being around the same close group of people 24 hours a day, 7 days a week will always result in one thing that is absolute…. that at least one person out of said group, if not all, gets to know you extremely well.  They see your ticks, what you do when you’re nervous, when you’re truly happy, when you’re sad, the whole shabang.  And more than that, they see your heart.  That is to say they see who you really are, that vulnerable state of being that is not obscured by any fake reaction or quick comeback.
It takes a ton of work not to let your ego have its way, but a cool trick many practice is to turn your ego into an object, instead of who you are, and ask yourself why you’re feeling the way you do about any given thing.  It could be something you took offense to, the way you feel about your significant other, the way you feel about your job, anything.  Analyzing any controversial feeling you have can be a good way to return your mind to a more neutral state.
In Johns last interview before his death, he told Rolling Stone (issue recently released) that he had gone through the majority of his life as though he were in a boxing stance, fists always up, on guard, ready for retaliation or attack when necessary.  It took Yoko for him to finally realize it wasn’t necessary to be that protective over himself, he admitted that it changed him for the better, and made him a happier person.
The moral?  Don’t let your ego get the best of you, and the next time you leave your house, check it at the door!  (Unless you live on a bus, in which case check it at the bunk curtain.)
