Curious Jaime and THE Imagine Peace Tower

Written by Jaime Walden

Whenever we give a tour of the Lennon Bus, one of the first things that we explain on board is the replica of Yoko Ono’s Imagine Peace tower.  Dedicated to her late husband, the installation is located on Viðey Island, just off the coast of Reykjavik, Iceland.  Two days ago, I had the opportunity to visit the real monument.

You might be thinking to yourself, “Jaime, is there now a Lennon Cruise?”  Nay.  I am currently blogging to you live from the train from Stockholm to Gothenburg, Sweden.  I am sitting with my cousin Brian and heading southbound to watch my big brother get married!  On the way to Sweden, we took a four day vacation/layover in Iceland.  The country is absolutely breath taking.  At every turn you are completely surrounded by nature’s extremes.  Reykjavik is actually on a peninsula, and with just a five minute ferry ride you can see the Imagine Peace tower.

Thanks to the B-child, arrangements were made so that my cousin and I could see the tower firsthand.  Guðlaug Elísabet Ólafsdóttir was kind enough to greet us at the ferry, show us the tower, and give us a one-of a-king tour of the island.  Seeing the tower right in front of me was an incredible experience.  Although it was not lit (this takes place on October 9th through December 8th,) I was able to step directly onto the stone and see the words “Imagine Peace” in the 24 different languages.  It truly was peaceful to be on an island where you can see Reykjavik on one side, mountains on the other, and a stone beach as you look down off the hills.

When we create music or art, the entire process of conception, design, and execution is rewarding within itself.  However, to be able to share your art with others transcends far beyond what any museum, recording, or replica can convey.  Having this experience reminded me of performing for the first time, or going to see one of my favorite bands play.  You simply “light up” inside.
