Ben Cameron: The True Power of Performing Arts

Written by The Lennon Bus

It seems these days TED talks get tossed around more than beach balls at a Buffet concert. It’s the cool thing to do and quite frankly, I want to be cool. What’s great about the latest cool thing to do is that it teaches you something. Now that’s super cool. In this TED talk Ben Cameron discusses the power of the performing arts. He touches on the barriers they face in a era when everything is online and instant and he gives insight into the power they provide and they possible issues they can resolve. This is one beach ball to pass on. Check it out.

Safe Nap Habits Your Hard Drive Will Thank You For

Written by Jeff Sobel

I often see people doing something relatively dangerous to their laptops, so thought it worth writing a blog post about.  Maybe it will save someone from having to take advantage of Apple’s amazing AppleCare and restoring all their files from their Time Machine backup. One of the great things about MacBooks is that they wake from sleep almost instantly when you lift their lid.  This is because when the computer is in Sleep mode it retains all the data in its memory (RAM) by using a small amount of power.  Since the contents of its memory are saved, when the computer wakes up it comes back in exactly the same state as when you put it to sleep.  Since power is required to retain the information in the computer’s RAM you’ll notice that if you leave your MacBook unplugged in sleep mode for awhile it will have less available battery when you wake it back up.  That’s the price you pay for the instantaneous wakeup that we all love. So what happens when the battery is completely drained?  Well, when the MacBook senses that the battery is just about depleted it goes into a deeper sleep mode, commonly referred to as Hibernation.  In Hibernate, the contents of the RAM are written to the hard drive and the computer goes completely to sleep.  Because hard drives don’t require power to retain their data, Hibernate mode doesn’t use the battery.  But when the computer is woken back up the RAM must be restored …

The Beatles. iTunes. Heaven.

Written by The Lennon Bus

When I was in 6th grade I remember watching a The Beatles Anthology TV series in 1995. I sat with legs crossed and eyes wide as my mind was filled with curiosity as to who these four men were. My following birthday I asked my mom for CD’s. The Beatles Anthology to be specific. These were the first CD’s I ever owned. At the time I was excited, no doubt, but little did I know the impact that this decision would make on my life. The Beatles now being available on iTunes now allows todays generation as well as generations to come to be one click away from the most powerful music group in history. Music is important to have, but it is even more important to share. This holiday season share the magic with someone you love, even if it’s $1.29 at a time.

That’s All Folks

Written by The Lennon Bus

Sitting in the airport terminal somehow makes it official, wheels have been traded for wings and 2010 now plays the fading moon as the sun begins to rise on the new year. While I sip on my over priced airport coffee I look back on what has been an amazing year for the Lennon Bus. During this holiday season join us as we look back on all of the amazing people we met and projects we made, from Yoko Ono to TED, The Black Eyed Peas to the OYC, we have covered the spectrum of imagination. Thanks to everyone that has made the 2010 tour possible and to all those already getting their hands dirty for 2011.

The Weekly Peace: Veterans for Peace

Written by The Lennon Bus

This time last year the Lennon Bus was headed to South Beach. Hurricanes were churning up high winds and reporters were flying around with tough questions; tough questions because our mission that week was to Honor Veterans. This was a strange task for a bus with a famous peacenik stamped on the side of it. The contrast quickly fades though as you begin to do your research. November 11th is known as Veterans Day in the United States but it derives from Armistice Day, the day World War I was drawn to a close with a peace treaty. Countries across the world celebrate this day, all with a different name attached to it. Whether you call it Armistice Day, Remembrance Day, or Veterans Day, they all intend to Imagine Peace for a day and honor those that lost their lives fighting for it. This November 11th we’ll be premiering our work from last year and we’d love for you to check it out. While we have you hanging in anticipation though we’d love to tell you about a great organization that we worked with last year in Miami as well as in an impromptu video shoot in Santa Monica. Here is a little info from their website: Veterans For Peace is a national organization founded in 1985. It is structured around a national office in Saint Louis, MO and comprised of members across the country organized in chapters or as at-large members. There is an annual convention each year attended by …

AVID Imports Zombies to Savannah

Written by Hans Tanner

A big part of this job is being comfortable with uncomfortable situations, so yesterday was just another day in the life on the Lennon Bus. When I was a kid, I never EVER liked to put on face paint when any kind of social gathering called for it. The fair, Harbor Fest, Halloween, it didn’t matter, no paint was to be put on my face.  The smell, the sticky texture, the weird looks you get from others, none of it has ever seemed even slightly appealing to me. That being said, when I was assigned yesterday to be transformed into a zombie I was not exactly thrilled at the idea…   However, I’d be hard pressed to recall a day I’ve ever laughed harder.  My brain slurping cohorts and I wreaked havoc throughout Savannah for the entire day. We filmed in a local graveyard, shot in dark alleyways, and crawled throughout the streets. Of course, scaring the snot out of unsuspecting civilians along the way.  Being that it was Halloween, what better way to spend the night then to carry on the day’s activities at the local dance hotspot?  After a healthy serving of upper frontal lobe, Kevin and I were the last standing zombies. We hobbled our way into the middle of a crowded dance-floor and proceeded to “zombie seizure” our way around our victims.  Girls screamed, and guys stared in disgust as their partners no longer wanted to dance for some reason.  All a cap to an epic day …

The Mbox Family: Easin’ the Wean

Written by Ryan L'Esperance

I consider myself a techie. I consider my home a toy box. Living on board the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus is a dream come true. As we travel all across the country creating magic with students and artist one day at a time, many people ask us about our lives on the road. However, few people ask us about our time off the road. The Lennon Bus has a tour schedule that keeps us busy for 10 months out of the year, but what about those other two months that we are not living on board a world class recording studio? At first thought you may imagine that it is a nightmare going from having a bus that yields the highest production value to sitting on your own couch at home having nightmares about bus call. Luckily for me Avid Pro Tools has made the weaning process an ease. The MBox family allows me mobility without compromising quality. I can take all I learned this year out on the road and keep tracks cooking at home working on music with my friends. This winter I’m going to miss the bus, but I’m not going to have to miss the quality of music Avid affords me on board and at home.

Goin’ Old School in San Francisco

Written by The Lennon Bus

Recently, the Lennon Bus was in California for a number of different events.  One of those events happened to take place in San Francisco.  The next day, we had some down time.  We decided to take that opportunity and shoot a video…old school style.  We wanted to make a short film in the same vein as an old Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton film.  Basically we wanted it to look old.  Oh yea, we wanted it to be French, too.  The French part was easy.  We went down to the local costume shop and procured a couple of striped shirts and berets.  The first part (making it look old), was a bit more difficult.  See, out on the Lennon Bus, we shoot with some VERY MODERN and pretty high tech cameras, like the Sony EX-1 and the Sony EX-3.  We didn’t really have a budget (none at all, in fact) to purchase an old camera, let alone all the film stock and processing fees, so we had to figure out a way to make the footage that our cameras captured look very old. Luckily, we have a very good friend in Apple’s Final Cut Studio. By utilizing just a few filters in this fantastic program, we were easily able to attain the look we were shooting (camera pun, get it???) for. Our footage originally looked like this:   The first thing we did, was use the 3-way color Corrector to adjust the colors levels just a bit:         …
