Happy Birthday Yoko

Written by The Lennon Bus

We hear it’s your birthday. It’s not our birthday too, but we would still like you to dance, take a ch-ch-ch-chance. Yoko Ono is celebrating her 77th birthday today. For over seven decades now she has been a pioneering voice of the arts. Without her love, support, and vision the Lennon Bus would not be possible. We would like thank her for taking a ch-ch-ch-chance with us 14 years ago when we kicked off the first Lennon Bus tour. Happy Birthday Yoko. Thank you for all you have done, all you are doing, and all you will do in the name of art, inspiration, and creativity. We Love You!

Herbie Hancock and The Imagine Project take home a Grammy

Written by Hans Tanner

With the 2010 Grammy’s officially delivered to their rightful owners in over 100 categories, I think its time for a bit of retrospect.  Hmmm… what to talk about… Cee-Lo’s kick a** performance of “(expletive deleted) You” complete with muppet backup dancers and singers AND Gweneth Paltrow accompaniment?  No, that won’t do.  How about Justin Bieber not winning best new artist?  No, too much controversy.  Or maybe I should go over what Lady Gaga was wearing?  Not shocking enough I think.  But Hans! I was Born This Way!! For me, one award stood out above the rest, the recipient of which is an undisputed musical genius and no stranger to being handed small golden gramophones.  For best pop collaboration with vocals, Herbie Hancock’s Imagine Project took home the trophy, an amazing compilation album which includes an awesome cover of “Imagine” as well as other John Lennon/Beatles songs.  The album was recorded across seven countries and includes artists from India Arie, to Dave Matthews and Pink.  Drawing from an impressive amount of genres, everything comes together to create a unique sound with its own sonic signature.  My favorite part?  Pinks intro on Imagine absolutely kills it!  Of course, it would be nothing without Herb’s piano backing, but that goes without saying.    Imagine Project Album Cover   For more information on the album or to discover your favorite part, check out the link below at Herbie’s site.  I’ve also included a video of the Imagine cover for your listening and viewing pleasure, recorded …

Comping Vocals on the Lennon Bus with Pro Tools 9

Written by Ryan L'Esperance

Hey everybody! Ryan here, with a little Pro Tools Tip that I’d like to share with you. I often find myself working on the Lennon Bus in a situation when there is a point in the song that the artist is having a little trouble in a section or we want to try some different variations for a verse per say. So I use a technique called comping that allows the artist to do multiple takes of a section, try as many variations as they like so I can later pick the best take or pieces of the take to create the best “comp.”  Here’s how you set it up. The first thing you do is set up Pro Tools to Loop Record. This is done by right clicking or control clicking the Record button until it shows the loop record icon.   Next you record as many takes as need be to get the best performance out of the artist.   Once you have your takes recorded, right click on the region that you’ve been loop recording and select “matches> Expand to new playlists.”   Go to your Track View Selector and select playlist.   You will now see all your takes, you can select and solo each individual part and pick the best takes.   Next to the Comp Solo Button is an arrow that will allow you to copy the selection to the Main Playlist. This is where you rinse and repeat.

Who is John Lennon?

Written by The Lennon Bus

Lennon may no longer be with us but his music is something that will never die. Like a sparklers glow passed from hand to hand on the 4th of July, Lennon’s music continues to put dazzles in the eyes of ears hearing it for the first time. 50 years ago Lennon himself could of never imagined the means available for music to spread it’s wings in the 21st century. Between tweets and email inboxes, from Facebook posts to iPod playlists, mixed CD’s and iTune’s Genius’, the means to share music with family, friends, and fans has become multifaceted. The Lennon Bus is one of those facets. We are not just dedicated to spreading the legacy of John Lennon through music and creation to students across the nation, but also to spreading that spark. That moment of light that burns so bright and true. The moment imagination first kisses reality moving from the shadows of your mind to the light of your fingers. The moment music is made. Lennon’s talents allowed him to make moments into music, music into bands, bands into Beatles, Beatles into culture, culture into movements, and movements back into moments, moments that make change. The Lennon Bus realizes though that many youngsters that come on board the bus do not know who John is. We relish in the opportunity to share the sparkle, to pass the light, and to dazzle the eye. In an effort to address this issue with the youth we look forward to sharing these …

Fall into Love with Mobile Roadie

Written by The Lennon Bus

The Lennon Bus has been in and out of Las Vegas for various conventions and student projects but we still haven’t had the opportunity to catch a show. And if there was a show of shows for the Lennon Bus crew to catch of course it would have to be Love, the Cirque du Soleil musical spectacle that has received raving reviews near and far. While we intend to catch the show sooner than later, Mobile Roadie has released an app to allow us to dive into the show without even stepping a foot into Sin City. Fall into Love with the latest app from Mobile Roadie, Love. And of course if you haven’t downloaded our app yet you better get on it to stay in touch with the Lennon Bus while your on the move. Download the Lennon Bus App here.

Hans + Philosophy = British Accents

Written by Hans Tanner

Here’s an equation/recipe to ponder: take one part inspiration, add three creative individuals, throw in a driver, multiply by the square root of education, supply an exponent of legacy, divide by an awesome support team of tour managing and senior staff, and subtract a substantial quantity of boredom…what does it equal?  Well, it’s supposed to be the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus, but I feel that may be open to interpretation at this point.  Moving forward into the new year with the bus has been an enlightening experience, as I begin to further grasp just what it is the bus stands for, the way it operates, and how the individuals who’s passions have aligned to make this crazy thing run do what they do. As we wrap up the first recording session of the year with the awesome students of the Orange County High School for the arts, countless smiles, numerous laughs, and 8 hours of recording fun reaffirm why we’re doing this, to change lives baby! (Insert Austin Powers accent).  Not to mention the fact that mid-day we were honored by a visit from world class piano virtuoso, Lang Lang.  To say that the students eyes were the size of dinner plates would be an understatement, as Lang Lang took part in a student run interview, played some keys, and spoke with the kids about music, education, and inspiration.  A day they’ll never forget? Absolutely.  Lives positively affected?  Check.  Lennon’s message carried on?  Oh I think so.  Just another day …

Imagine That! Magic in Costa Mesa

Written by Ryan L'Esperance

Magic is the claimed art of altering things either by supernatural means or through knowledge of occult natural laws unknown to science. Every now and then John Lennon himself stops by the bus to dust of his wand and make a little magic happen for us. Yesterday was one of those days. While on breaking from the Lennon Bus studio session, students stepped outside to have some fun with a piano that looks like it fell out of the record slip of Sgt. Peppers. Using their iPhone’s they looked up the chord progression and lyrics to John Lennon’s Imagine and started to play. Quickly following suit I took out my iPhone and started to record. It wasn’t until the magic was over that I realized this brief moment captured the defining spirit of the Lennon Bus. Students coming together to make music while using technology to explore the Lennon Legacy and their own imaginations. Check out my iPhone video here.

Learning to Edit on the Fly with Avid Media Composer 5

Written by The Lennon Bus

In less than 10 days my bottom is going to be glued to a chair and my eyeballs will be locked on a computer screen. These details alone don’t do much differentiation between most of my days, but this detail does, the Lennon Bus crew will be in Burbank training on Avid’s Media Composer 5. When you’re working with the Lennon Bus, one of the biggest perks is the training provided by our many sponsors. It won’t be the first time we’ve trained with Avid and it certainly won’t be the last. As we prepare for our week of knowledge farming I wanted to share with you some new features I’m excited to learn. One of the new features added since we last trained on Media Composer is the Smart Tool. The Smart Tool allows the user to have an active cursor in the timeline. In previous editions you had to select one tool and once you were done using it you had to manually select the next tool. Now the cursor will contextual change itself to make your editing workflow faster than ever. Check out this video to learn more The Smart Tool
