Hans + Philosophy = British Accents

Written by Hans Tanner

Here’s an equation/recipe to ponder: take one part inspiration, add three creative individuals, throw in a driver, multiply by the square root of education, supply an exponent of legacy, divide by an awesome support team of tour managing and senior staff, and subtract a substantial quantity of boredom…what does it equal?  Well, it’s supposed to be the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus, but I feel that may be open to interpretation at this point.  Moving forward into the new year with the bus has been an enlightening experience, as I begin to further grasp just what it is the bus stands for, the way it operates, and how the individuals who’s passions have aligned to make this crazy thing run do what they do. As we wrap up the first recording session of the year with the awesome students of the Orange County High School for the arts, countless smiles, numerous laughs, and 8 hours of recording fun reaffirm why we’re doing this, to change lives baby! (Insert Austin Powers accent).  Not to mention the fact that mid-day we were honored by a visit from world class piano virtuoso, Lang Lang.  To say that the students eyes were the size of dinner plates would be an understatement, as Lang Lang took part in a student run interview, played some keys, and spoke with the kids about music, education, and inspiration.  A day they’ll never forget? Absolutely.  Lives positively affected?  Check.  Lennon’s message carried on?  Oh I think so.  Just another day …

Imagine That! Magic in Costa Mesa

Written by Ryan L'Esperance

Magic is the claimed art of altering things either by supernatural means or through knowledge of occult natural laws unknown to science. Every now and then John Lennon himself stops by the bus to dust of his wand and make a little magic happen for us. Yesterday was one of those days. While on breaking from the Lennon Bus studio session, students stepped outside to have some fun with a piano that looks like it fell out of the record slip of Sgt. Peppers. Using their iPhone’s they looked up the chord progression and lyrics to John Lennon’s Imagine and started to play. Quickly following suit I took out my iPhone and started to record. It wasn’t until the magic was over that I realized this brief moment captured the defining spirit of the Lennon Bus. Students coming together to make music while using technology to explore the Lennon Legacy and their own imaginations. Check out my iPhone video here.

Learning to Edit on the Fly with Avid Media Composer 5

Written by The Lennon Bus

In less than 10 days my bottom is going to be glued to a chair and my eyeballs will be locked on a computer screen. These details alone don’t do much differentiation between most of my days, but this detail does, the Lennon Bus crew will be in Burbank training on Avid’s Media Composer 5. When you’re working with the Lennon Bus, one of the biggest perks is the training provided by our many sponsors. It won’t be the first time we’ve trained with Avid and it certainly won’t be the last. As we prepare for our week of knowledge farming I wanted to share with you some new features I’m excited to learn. One of the new features added since we last trained on Media Composer is the Smart Tool. The Smart Tool allows the user to have an active cursor in the timeline. In previous editions you had to select one tool and once you were done using it you had to manually select the next tool. Now the cursor will contextual change itself to make your editing workflow faster than ever. Check out this video to learn more The Smart Tool

Take It To 11

Written by The Lennon Bus

We are currently driving from North Hollywood to Anaheim for the NAMM Show . It’s a short drive relative to what the year has in store but it’s enough to shake the dust off the butterflies in our bellies and get us ready to Take It To 11. On the books NAMM is a trade-show that allows manufactures, vendors, buyers, musicians, and fans to come together to see what the New Year has brought in terms of Music Technology. But let us remember what those tools are used for. Some have knobs. Some have switches. Some have levers. Others are faders. Some are touch screen. Some have cables. Some are wireless. Some are loud. And others silent. There will be many different. tools, tech, and toys we will immerse ourselves in for the few days, but they all serve one goal - capturing dreams. Maybe you prefer to let your ideas come out with just an acoustic guitar or maybe a bumping sub in a club, either way you will find it this week at NAMM. And maybe you won’t be able to make it to NAMM this week but that doesn’t mean you can’t join us in Taking It To 11. So this year whether you are in a band or a solo act, a beginner or a veteran, classically trained or garage rocked, whatever it is you do that makes you you take it one step further this year. Take It To 11. Nigel says Take It To 11. …

The Definition of Inventory

Written by The Lennon Bus

According to Merriam-Webster the definition of Inventory is: 1. an itemized list of current assets: as (1) : a catalog of the property of an individual or estate (2) : a list of goods on hand The beginning of every Lennon Bus tour begins with this itemizing of assets, catalogs of property, and lists of goods. It is important we have all of our eggs in a basket and ducks in a row before we go roaring across the country in a fury of media production. This year we have added quite a few extra assets to our itemized lists I’d like to point out. The Mbox Pro The Lennon Bus has been using Pro Tools systems to produce music with students and artist for quite some time now. We are certainly proud of the amazing Pro Tools HD systems we have within in the bus but now you can experience the same world-class results in our tents with the Pro Tools Mbox Pro. The Mbox Pro has made a change that you can see, feel, and most importantly hear and all brought to you by the same engineering team responsible for the high-end Pro Tools HD systems we keep rockin’ in the inside of the bus. I’m excited to explore the power of the new Mbox Pro’s and I’m even more excited they will be in our tents available for visitors to experiment with. MC Color No it’s not the name of the latest rapper signed to Crayola Records, but …

The Hans Juxtaposition

Written by The Lennon Bus

Juxtaposition - noun 1. an act or instance of placing close together or side by side; especially for contrast or comparison. Like a Jedi mind trick from Mr. Miyagi himself, our efforts to throw Hans in front of the camera with no time to think may have seemed trivial and counterproductive to him at the time. But Mr. Miyagi know better Hans-san. (Read in Mr. Miyagi accent) After a couple months on the road and a couple weeks at Camp Tyler Hans has learned the Force and is ready to take on 2011. To further our point in a grand visual display we have juxtaposed Hans videos for you. Please enjoy as you watch from the first time we threw him in front of the camera and watched him grow on the road, to his latest video that Hans produced and directed after gettin’ his noggin’ filled with knowledge by T-Win himself. Enjoy. *Note: Yes, I know I mixed references from Star Wars and The Karate Kid, but you have to admit the idea of a Mr. Mi-Yoda is pretty awesome. Nah, super awesome. The Hans Juxtaposition (in order of release)

Lennon Bus 70th T-Shirt

Written by The Lennon Bus

In the past year the Lennon Bus has taken the time at many of our stops to ask artist to produce something on board the bus to honor John on his 70th Birthday. Our Creative Coordinator, Tyler Winick, developed a graphic intro for these video pieces and it was awesome. So awesome that it became a T-Shirt. A T-Shirt that you can now buy with proceeds going to the Lennon Bus. Check out the Livenation store here where you can buy a shirt and check out some of the videos we created to honor John here.

Hans in Training

Written by Hans Tanner

My brain is completely full, an interesting feeling I’m sure most have experienced, but at the current moment I’m at an impasse.  I’m in an area of time in between work mode and celebratory mode, we’ll call it the neutral zone, as I just spent the last 60 hours of my life studying for a test… which has just been passed…. Oh yes : ) The bus requires a lot of its crew, program certifications being one of a myriad of abilities a producer and engineer has to fit into his repertoire.  Spending 10 days at Camp Tyler makes achieving these certifications all the more enjoyable.  Representing the best of training centers with a conducive learning environment, friendly morale boosting dog (RESSES!), scheduled exercise curriculum, and outdoor pool, camp Tyler has been nothing short of an amazing experience. My certification is now complete, catalyzing a beautiful transition to the weekend.  Next stop, camera land, and of course, more Camp Tyler.  Oh how Monday can’t come soon enough!! Have a great weekend everybody; stay tuned for more camp action with the crew.
