better than neon post-its?

Written by Jaime Walden

Normally, I make lists for everything.  As a tour manager, you have to be highly organized and on top of everything from logistics to financial transactions to making sure the boys on the bus get fed.  But sometimes when you’re in the creative zone, you tend to end up with hummed melodies recorded on your cell phone, song lyrics on a cocktail napkin, and then try to piece it all together later.  Recently, my friend introduced me to an amazing OS X writing app called Scrivener.  I officially have a new boyfriend. Scrivener uses index cards and cork boards as an easy means of organization.  On the side tool bar, everything that you compose (which frequently saves for those who tend to forget,) automatically organizes into an easy-to-follow drop down menu.  Another perk of the app is that you can add photos and video clips, move around index cards, and essentially write in however you personally feel more comfortable.  It’s really a great asset for writing scripts, storyboards, novels, and research papers.  The app definitely becomes clearer once tested, and you can download the trial version for 30 days. Be a media beast with the help of Digital Media Academy

Written by The Lennon Bus

The Digital Media Academy (DMA) is a nationally-recognized organization offering hands-on learning experiences in a broad range of digital media technologies. DMA offers summer camps for kids and teens and “Pro-Series” courses for adult-learners. Founded in 2001 by a group from Stanford University, DMA is best known for its premier summer programs hosted at 18 prestigious destination campuses, such as Stanford University, Harvard University and the University of Chicago – just to name a few. In addition to its summer programs, DMA provides on-site training to schools and companies and offers workshops throughout the year at its training facility in Campbell, CA. I had the pleasure of taking some DMA courses last winter and can honestly say that it was an amazing and valuable experience. I learned so much so quickly and was able to immediately apply my knowledge in the classroom and in the field. For more information you can visit digitalmediaacademy.org

Lennon Bus and Rollins College in Detroit City

Written by The Lennon Bus

A couple weeks ago the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus deviated from the traditional path of it’s production and embarked on a fresh new multimedia adventure extravaganza. The Bus teamed up with a group of students from Rollins College (located in Winter Park, Florida) to spend their spring break in Detroit. The school’s mission with these type of trips is clear; to engage students, faculty, and staff in the community through experiences of education, reflection, and action. Detroit is at the crest of a wave of socioeconomic destruction and the students planned a week of events to educate themselves on the rich history of Detroit culture that has been drown out by the wave. I was fortunate enough to come along and document their experiences. I brought along two Sony Z7U’s along with a Handycam and Cybershot. I also had my MacBook Pro and my iPhone. I was amazed to find the efficient and effective workflow I was able to create with an amount of gear that I was able to bring along with me on the plane. They explored and experienced Detroit for a week. Their events ranged from a Detroit Piston’s basketball game and Ford Motors River Rouge Factory Tour to volunteering at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen and Avalon Housing Projects. In typical Lennon Bus fashion the students were able to get their hands on the gear and work behind the scenes of the documentary as well. It was an amazing learning experience for everyone involved. The project is …

West Los Angeles, Mackie, Celebrities

Written by The Lennon Bus

Hey! Doug checking in from the ol’ Beverly Garland Holiday Inn in North Hollywood, California.  The bus just returned from a stop at West LA Music - what a cool place!  Mackie, Crate and Ampeg set us up with this stop, and we could immediately see why.  It’s the kind of place where pros go to get their gear, so we ran into a wide variety of interesting people.  Inside, customers (and a few employees) jammed out on the Rockband 2, while outside I gave tours of the bus to everyone from musicians to pedestrians who saw the bus on their walk to the hardware store.  At the end of the day Godin raffled off a free Redline Electric Guitar!  Check out the picture below of the kid who won it.  So all in all, it was another great day onboard the Lennon Bus.  Check out this music video on peace a group of artists showed me during the day! Peace! -Fresh

Aperture Tip - Dodge and Burn Plugin

Written by Jeff Sobel

In my last post I talked about the saturation and vibrancy adjustments in Aperture 2.  I mentioned that these powerful tools are great when you want to adjust the color in the entire image but not a good solution for selectively adjusting color in only parts of the image.  Aperture provides an often overlooked tool which is fantastic for making these types of selective adjustments.  It’s the Dodge and Burn plugin and it can be found in the Images>Edit With> menu as seen in the screen grab below: Though Dodge and Burn is included with Aperture 2 it is actually a plugin so when you select it in the menu your image opens up in a new window.  It’s much like sending the image to an external editor except that it’s more tightly integrated with Aperture.  The name Dodge and Burn comes from the darkroom technique of using a card to dodge (lighten) or burn (darken) select areas of a photo print while it is in the chemical bath to manipulate the exposure of the photograph.  The Dodge and Burn plugin in Aperture 2 allows you to do the same thing with your mouse, no noxious chemicals required.  The great thing about the D&B plugin is that it not only allows you to adjust light/dark but a half-dozen other effects as well, including saturation (see screen grab below). By playing with this tool you’ll quickly learn how to manipulate the color saturation in certain areas of your image while leaving other …

Charlie Wonka and the Jam Factory

Written by The Lennon Bus

Hey there children!  Who here likes old movies that have been remade with Johnny Depp in them?!  Me too!  And Tyler too!  So we were jamming on the Roland piano and drum gear in the rear studio the other day and we started playing a song from the original Willie Wonka movie, and it turned into this jam, so we used Quicktime Pro Movie Recorder on our two laptops to record this multicam jam session!  Enjoy!

New Mexico, Jedi Mind Tricks, and Michel Gondry

Written by The Lennon Bus

Hey there people!  It’s D Money checking in from beautiful Palm Springs, California at the 2009 CUE Convention!  So naturally, I wanted to talk about the video project I worked on in Albuquerque at the University of New Mexico a couple weeks ago!  I always love when students come together from different high schools and work together to create a fresh, new project, and this was exactly that scenario.  Being my first video project of the year, I was pumped to find myself working with all video students.  The theme of our video turned into a Michel Gondry style Mind Trick video, even featuring a cameo from Jaime Rothschild!  So without further ado, I present to you the first Moose and Goose production of 2009, “Mind Over Matter” by the Illusionists!
