New Mexico, Jedi Mind Tricks, and Michel Gondry

Written by The Lennon Bus

Hey there people!  It’s D Money checking in from beautiful Palm Springs, California at the 2009 CUE Convention!  So naturally, I wanted to talk about the video project I worked on in Albuquerque at the University of New Mexico a couple weeks ago!  I always love when students come together from different high schools and work together to create a fresh, new project, and this was exactly that scenario.  Being my first video project of the year, I was pumped to find myself working with all video students.  The theme of our video turned into a Michel Gondry style Mind Trick video, even featuring a cameo from Jaime Rothschild!  So without further ado, I present to you the first Moose and Goose production of 2009, “Mind Over Matter” by the Illusionists!

Apple, iPod, health?

Written by The Lennon Bus

Okay, so I know I’ve joked about this before, but one of my real concerns with life on the road actually is physical fitness and health.  Trying to find a hotel with a fitness center or a pool big enough to swim laps in can sometimes be tough, and I have troubles motivating myself to run miles outside.  That’s where Apple came in.  They’ve teamed up with Nike Plus to create a really cool combination of music, technology, and running.  So how it works is you get some Nike running shoes, an Apple iPod nano, and a chip that goes inside your shoes.  It tracks how far you run, and gives you option for your iPod to play music while telling you mile markers you reach, calories you’ve burned, and time left in your run.  All your info is posted on the Nike Plus website, and you can challenge friends there.  Right now, Seamus and I have a “first to run 50 miles challenge”.  I also have a challenge with a teammate from soccer back the University of Miami!  So I just thought I’d share that one with everybody, and if you get motivated to start up Nike Plus, let’s get a challenge started! Ok? Ok. Fresh

look, up in the sky!

Written by Jaime Walden

Dear Blog, Today is a wonderful day.  Thanks to the Digital Media Academy, I will now be traveling in style with my new MacBook Air.  Or, as Brian calls it, “Our first MBA!”  MACGyver and myself will be taking our first trip together to Palm Springs, CA for CUE 2009.  Over the course of our days there, we’ll be conducting a high school recording session and video premiere, giving tours, and holding “Ask the Expert” demos with the Digital Media Academy at our booth.  Stop by and say hello, MACGyver and I will be the two smallest ones there. ;) On Mama’s Jukebox: Elliott Smith - “Ballad of Big Nothing” x mama

Monterey

Written by The Lennon Bus

Last week, we were once again present at the Arizona Daily Star Battle of the Bands, and once again we were treated to a promising mix of young bands.  The Rialto Theatre was the setting for this night, who in the coming weeks will have some of my favorite artists there like Bad Religion, Charlie Hunter, and Ozomatli.  Last year’s winner, Mirror Image opened up the show, and then 6 great bands vied for the chance to spend the next day with us, as well as great prizes from Godin Guitars, Ampeg, Crate, and even Rockband 2.  Monterey, an energetic 8 piece ska-core group ending up winning the battle after delivering an extremely up-tempo, high energy set that featured a 4 part horn section. The next day, the members of Monterey arrived early and what followed was a fun day.  The video that we produced reflects the band’s favorite activities, loading gear, hanging out with friends, eating cereal, and chasing around their precocious cat, Mister Boots.  I hope it is as much fun to watch, as it was to make. Oh, and Tucson is a very difficult city to correctly spell, here’s a tip:  think of it as “Tuck-son” but please remember that the “K” is silent.  Thanks to Chief Engineer Jeff Sobel for the advice!

Romeo + Juliet + Andrea + Lennon Bus

Written by The Lennon Bus

This past week the Lennon Bus bought an extra case of water and hit the desert with Mirror Image. Naturally the crew opted to use one of those elusive “days off” to shoot a music video. The bus has since kept rolling and production is a wrap. The video is in post-production right now and will be appearing soon on our website. Check out the work the ladies put in last year and stay tuned for their premiere of “Romeo”.

Battle of the Bands, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy

Written by The Lennon Bus

Hey er’body! Douglas Fir checking in from Albuquerque, New Mexico.  So we just got done with a Battle of the Band in Tucson, Arizona at the historic Rialto Theatre, and it was sick (in the good way)!  First off, they packed as many people as possible into the Rialto, from kids to grandparents, so the energy was intense (don’t believe me?  scroll down to check out the picture i posted.  did you scroll yet?  see, i told you).  Secondly, the Arizona Daily Star selected the top 6 high school bands in the Tucson area to compete, so the musical performances were stellar!  And of course, I got to roam around with a Sony EX1 and a900 (super sweet cameras!).  Monterey, a ska band from Tucson High School, rocked the crowd with their slick horn licks, vocal harmonies, and cool stage presence, and took home the grand prize (there’s a pic on them in their moment of glory below, too!).  So definitely be checking into the site in the near future for Moneterey’s music video, and my new multimedia educational enterntainmental vlog!  Peace y’all. -Fresh

Photo Tip: Saturation and Vibrancy

Written by Jeff Sobel

For most of us, the photos we take are more about capturing a moment than crafting an image.  We aren’t setting up backdrops and lights in a studio, posing a carefully styled model - we’re with friends or family at a gathering and we’re often as much a part of the fun as we are intent on capturing the fun in a photo.  In these situations some remarkable images can be made with a good eye for composition and exposure, but the fact is that you have to shoot the moment as it occurs and can’t wait until the perfect light filters through the sky and you can’t stop the action to capture your friends when they are posed just as you’d hope.  Frequently you’re happy just to have the camera in your hand when these photo-worthy moments happen.  This means that you often come home with a few photos that capture a memorable moment but are otherwise very ordinary photographs.  Luckily there are a few things you can do on your Mac to transform an unremarkable image into one a little more visually interesting.  Aperture 2 provides some great tools for doing this that are powerful, fast, easy to use, and a lot of fun to play with.  Two of my favorite adjustments are Saturation and Vibrancy.  Sliders for these settings can be found in the Adjustments panel or HUD. The Saturation slider affects the amount of color in the image.  Reducing the saturation lowers the amount of color; you …
