D.C.’s Duke Ellington High School students are going to do it!
The Black Eyed Peas did it!
Even Jackson Browne did it!
And you can do it, too!
The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus is coming to the Department’s LBJ Building Plaza on Tuesday, May 11, and just like so many artists and aspiring musicians and music producers have done, you can tour this amazing rolling recording studio!
What is the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus?
The Lennon Educational Tour Bus provides students with access to the latest music, audio, video, and broadcast technologies. The program works with local partners to schedule free events for middle, high-school, and college-age students to tour the bus, and experience the fascinating worlds of music production, and video and digital photography.
Why is it Coming to ED?
The bus will be parked outside LBJ’s West-end plaza from approximately 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on May 11, where it will host groups of students from D.C.-metro area schools who are interested in learning about music recording and production. In addition to the student tours, there will be student performances on the plaza at approximately 1 p.m. in advance of a scheduled visit to the bus by Secretary Duncan (scheduled for 1:30 p.m.) Former Secretary of Education Richard Riley will join Secretary Duncan, who will make very brief remarks and pose for photos with students and officials from a number of music education organizations.
Department employees are welcome to tour the bus throughout the day and enjoy the student performances on the plaza.

The increasing accessibility of digital technology has led to an amazing expansion of opportunity in the art of digital storytelling. The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus has been at the forefront of this new media explosion, having produced daily video projects with students since January of 2001. The Lennon Bus puts state-of-the-art digital video equipment into the hands of workshop participants and teaches the entire digital workflow from storyboarding to web publication and DVD burning. Students leave the experience having shot, chopped, scored, and (most importantly) finished an entire digital video production. Using the latest cameras and professional hardware/software solutions including Avid Media Composer and Pro Tools, participants are exposed to the exciting world of digital videography and learn hot techniques of the trade. The accessibility of professional-quality technology is making it possible for millions of new voices to be heard and the John Lennon Bus is putting these tools into the hands of tomorrow's great digital producers.
